Leading by Example: Ecology Action Launches Míocar in Watsonville

As a founding member of the Monterey Bay Area Climate Justice Collaborative (MBACJC), Ecology Action is consistently looking for ways to turn regional climate goals into tangible community benefits. Their latest initiative, the official launch of Míocar in Watsonville, is a perfect example of this commitment. This 100% electric vehicle (EV) car-sharing service is part of the broader ¡Adelante Watsonville! project, designed to bring affordable, clean transportation to the heart of the community.

The program is built to be a practical and inclusive alternative to the high costs of private car ownership. For a simple membership fee and a rate of just $4 per hour (or $35 for the full day), residents can reserve a late-model electric vehicle for everything from daily errands to work commutes. To ensure the service is accessible to as many people as possible, the program covers insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance in the hourly rate, and it accepts AB60 licenses for registration.

By placing eight electric vehicles at strategic hubs—including Watsonville City Hall, Romo Park, and the Municipal Airport—the project cuts down on local greenhouse gas emissions while providing a 24/7 mobility solution. Residents can manage their bookings easily through a smartphone app, making the transition to electric transit seamless and user friendly.

This launch represents a significant step forward for transportation justice in our region. Developed in partnership with the City of Watsonville and supported by a grant from the California Air Resources Board, Míocar proves that sustainable innovation works best when it is centered on equity and language access. It is a model for how collaborative leadership can create a cleaner, more connected future for every resident in the Monterey Bay area.
